Sponsored Wireless Connectivity
Qualcomm R&D is accelerating the growth and progress of the wireless industry by investing in programs with the potential to stimulate innovative new mobile business models. The goal of the Sponsored Connectivity program is to increase revenue opportunities for mobile network operators, application service providers (ASPs), device manufacturers and other stakeholders across the mobile ecosystem. The program focuses on providing mobile broadband access privileges to consumers who may be interested in going online, but who have not yet opted to enter into a traditional long-term service contract with a mobile service provider.
Extending the model successfully implemented by Amazon for the Kindle e-reader service, the Sponsored Connectivity model provides customers seeking to access online content or make online purchases with a “free” mobile broadband connection. In this type of on-demand transaction, the cost of the wireless connection is factored into the one-time purchase price of the content, good or service being requested. The application service provider pays the mobile operator for the service, in effect sponsoring the connectivity.
The Sponsored Connectivity model enables application service providers to extend their reach into the online arena. By offering a convenient way for customers to access their content and purchase their products and services online, they have the potential to reach new audiences and increase their sales. Mobile operators earn new revenue streams from the sponsoring ASPs. In addition, they have the opportunity to earn new customers who may be influenced to enter into traditional service contracts based on their Sponsored Connectivity experiences.
Breaking down barriers between ASPs and their customers, the Sponsored Connectivity model will augment mobile broadband usage and can be successfully applied to any consumer device that can be connected to a mobile broadband network. The program looks at both the technical implementation of simple and scalable solutions as well as business aspects.
