The World of Connected Things

One hundred billion mobile connections globally.... Talk like that 20 or even 10 years ago would have led to questions about the speaker’s mental state of mind. In 2010, it does not sound so ridiculous. Machine to Machine (M2M) communications and initiatives like nPhase, the joint venture between Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm, with which Vodafone has announced a strategic alliance, are changing the industry view of how many mobile connections there could be in the next 10 to 20 years. M2M is also seen as a way for operators to diversify into new areas and profit from additional revenue opportunities.

Where next for mobile voice?

Voice has been the backbone of mobile since the first cellular networks were launched in the 1970’s, and has remained so, even with the growth of SMS and mobile broadband data. Competition though, in voice and messaging, has given rise to flat rate voice and data packages – an almost all-you-can-eat proposal, comprising a monthly text bundle that only a hyperactive teenager can consume. Multiple verticals have been proposed to complement voice and text revenues; advertising, mapping, gaming, eCommerce, and even M2M. Most of these data services have yet to generate the substantive profits forecast by analysts and companies eager to promote their vision of a brave new mobile data world.

Day 1: Mobile World Congress comes with plenty of buzz, devices and opportunities.

The first day of MWC has been a little less busy that recent years, but still plenty of foot traffic and lots of first day announcements. New phones from all the main players and a slew of devices on the Android platform. Microsoft launched its new Windows® Phone 7 Series and I’m excited that Qualcomm announced that it will power this with its Snapdragon integrated chipset.
